Pecan pie is a classic Southern dessert that is loved by many. With its gooey filling and crunchy pecans, it's the perfect treat for any occasion. In this blog, we'll explore the history of pecan pie, its ingredients, and how to make it, as well as some tips for making the perfect pie.

History of Pecan Pie

Pecan pie is believed to have originated in the South, where pecan trees are abundant. It first appeared in cookbooks in the late 1800s, and by the early 1900s, it had become a staple dessert in the South. Today, pecan pie is enjoyed all over the world and is a popular dessert during the holiday season.

Tips for Making the Perfect Pecan Pie

  • Use fresh pecans: Fresh pecans will give your pie a better flavor and texture.

  • Toast the pecans: Toasting the pecans before adding them to the filling will enhance their flavor and give them a nice crunch.

  • Use a quality pie crust: Whether you make your own or use a store-bought crust, be sure to use a quality crust that will hold up to the filling.

  • Don't overbake: Overbaking the pie will result in a dry filling. The filling should be set but still slightly jiggly when you take it out of the oven.

How to Brown Butter:

Browning Butter: Brown butter, also known as beurre noisette in French, is a simple yet versatile ingredient that can add a rich, nutty flavor to a variety of dishes. To make brown butter, you will need unsalted butter and a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Melt the butter over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it starts to foam. Keep stirring until the foam subsides and the butter turns a golden brown color and smells nutty. Remove the saucepan from the heat and transfer the browned butter to a separate bowl to cool.

Brown butter adds a nutty, caramel-like flavor and aroma to desserts, elevating their taste and texture to a whole new level of deliciousness, making it a popular ingredient among food enthusiasts and bakers alike.

Pecan pie is a delicious dessert that has been enjoyed for generations. With its simple ingredients and easy preparation, it's the perfect dessert for any occasion. By following these tips, you'll be able to make the perfect pecan pie every time. So next time you're in the mood for something sweet, give pecan pie a try!

Total 1hr 10 mins

Ingredients:

Topping Ingredients:

    •  1 pie crust (homemade or store-bought) Check out our blog for a great recipe Flaky Butter Pie Crust

    • 2.5 cups whole or roughly chopped toasted pecans

    • 3 large eggs

    • 1/2 cup maple syrup

    • 3/4 cup light corn syrup

    • 3/4 tsp salt

    • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar

    • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract

    • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted and made into brown butter

      Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350F. Put a baking sheet in the oven while it’s preheating. Once you are ready to put the pie in the oven, that hot baking sheet will instantly start to bake the bottom of the crust. It’s a great pie tip!

  2. Set the pie dough in a pie dish (preferably metal).   Press the pie dough into the pie mold and letting the dough overhang.

  3. Trim the overhang around the perimeter of the pie mold. Using one’s fingers, pinch and crimp along the edge. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate while making the filling.

  4. For the filling: In a medium-size bowl, whisk together eggs and add maple syrup, light corn syrup, fine sea salt, dark brown sugar, vanilla extract, and stream in melted unsalted brown butter. Whisk together until thoroughly combined.

  5. Separately rough chop the pecans.

  6. Place chopped pecans (or whole pecans) into the chilled pie crust and pour in all of the filling

  7. Pop it into the oven set at 350F for 40-50 minutes or until pie is set.

  8. Let cool completely before serving.

    STORING:

To keep your homemade pecan pie fresh and delicious, let it cool completely before storing it in an airtight container or wrapping it tightly with plastic wrap and placing it in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, ensuring your pie stays moist and flavorful until you're ready to serve it.
